Marrying Nature with Meticulous Detail

One of Hawk & Co’s standout projects is the Headlands House in Dana Point, California. This oceanfront vacation home, completed over nearly six years, is a testament to the firm’s dedication to meticulous detail and biophilic design. The 7,500 square foot residence features five bedrooms, six full bathrooms and two powder rooms, with luxurious amenities such as firepits on each of the three levels, two outdoor kitchens and a swim-in-place lap pool. “From every major room, you can see a perfect horizon, so I didn’t want to compete against the star of the show, Mother Nature,” explains Jensen.

The interior design of the Headlands House mirrors the serene coastal environment. The finishes were carefully selected to mimic the colors of the beach and headlands, with subtle accents of steely blue and greens of the ocean, and beiges and browns coordinated to the shade of the sand and cliffs beyond.

Jensen’s favorite room, the kitchen, underwent a significant redesign to become a more open and social space. Originally designed with a full-height wall to conceal a cluttered sink, the kitchen now features a 5-foot sink that converts to a cold bar and a complete suite of Gaggenau appliances. “We re-laid out the kitchen, looked at all the appliances, and really kind of reallocated to make sure that [the owner] had everything that she needed when she was starting her life as a chef,” Jensen notes.

Unique inspirations and Feng Shui principles also played a significant role in the design. The home was reviewed by a Feng Shui master throughout the project to ensure good energy flow. Techniques such as using shiny surfaces like smoked mirrors and luminescent chandeliers, and designing double-height entry sequences, helped keep the energy circulating within the home. Additionally, unique material choices, such as custom stone tiles created from broken slabs, reflect Jensen’s commitment to sustainability and the Japanese concept of Wabi-sabi.

Gaggenau appliances play a pivotal role in many of Hawk & Co’s designs. Summer Jensen’s appreciation for Gaggenau stems from their technical precision, aesthetic appeal, and functionality.

Jensen highlights the user-friendly nature of Gaggenau appliances, which can transform even novice cooks into culinary enthusiasts. “These appliances make them a great cook. You can pre-set menus and have all your settings in a combi-steam oven or a combi-microwave oven,” she adds.

“Gaggenau is by far my favorite brand to work with because of its aesthetics. I don’t think there’s a prettier appliance on the market.”
